Writing a Thriller? Me? Say it isn't so!

  • Oct. 25th, 2008 at 2:11 PM

I jest in the subject line but it's true.  I wrote the story for Halloween.  It was short.  It came to five single-spaced pages, and it is more violent than anything I've written--but it's for Halloween so I didn't want a tame story.   I will post it up on Thursday.  But after I saved the story and went on to The Wrong Husband to finish chapter three, my mind kept drifting back to the thriller.  I know why things happened the way they did but no one else ever will unless I write it all out.  To test whether or not I should even waste my time writing more to it, I wrote the next couple of chapters and got attached to my characters and storyline.

I've been in a toss up since I finished Eye of the Beholder.  This hasn't happened to me before.  Usually, I pick another story idea and complete it in 2-3 months.  It's weird.  But maybe I need a break from romance.  I've been writing them non-stop since last time this year when I wrote my first one.

That being said, and felt, I'm going to write the psychological thriller.  I haven't decided on a title.  I am thinking Double (when you read the first chapter--which is the short story), you'll know why.  But somehow, that title doesn't seem to hook anyone to wanting to read it.  If I was a well-known author like Stephen King, I could slap on any old boring title and sell millions.  But for an unknown, I think a the title is going to need lots of work.  But I'll go back to that after I complete it.  I hope to finish it next month during the National Novel Writing Month that I signed up for.

My other issue is making up a name.  Now that I've associated my real name with romance, I don't want it to go under a different genre.  I was playing with J.B. Pearce, J.B. Russell, or E.J. White.  The first two are based off of initials of relatives.  The last one was based off a character I made up when I was 12.  I want to do initials for the first and middle name.   But I haven't seemed to get something that clicks yet.

So we'll see how my "vacation" from romance goes while I "visit" a detective who is searching for the serial killer who seems to be able to be in two places at once.  (Hence, my original thought of "Double" for the title.)

That was my old record. Ever since I finished Eye of the Beholder, I've been stuck in "Never gonna get even halfway there" land. I hope this thriller and joining Nano where I have to write 50,000 words next month will get me puttering on the author highway again.
